Coping with Cancer - Four Crucial Choices to Make
Facilitated by Lynn Eib
There’s so much about cancer which is out of our control—what the diagnosis is, what treatment is available, what the medical prognosis is—but we do have choices. I’ve met thousands of patients and caregivers and can attest to the crucial choices which help people cope better with cancer—emotionally, physically and spiritually. In this session, I’ll share four of them, including “Choose to refuse being positive all the time.”
About Lynn Eib: Lynn Eib is a long-time cancer survivor, a cancer patient advocate and an award-winning journalist. She has six titles published by Tyndale House, including When God & Cancer Meet with 100,000+ copies in print and Peace in the Face of Cancer, winner of the 2017 Golden Scrolls Nonfiction Book of the Year. For nearly two decades she worked as a patient advocate offering spiritual and emotional encouragement to patients and their caregivers in her oncologist’s office. The Cancer Prayer Support Group she founded in 1991 is believed to be the country’s oldest such faith-based group. Her website www.lynneib.com provides a bi-weekly blog of encouragement; tips for founding, facilitating and finding faith-based support groups; and free resources for cancer patient and their caregivers. She lives near Philadelphia with her pastor-husband. They have three grown daughters and seven grandchildren ages 9 and under.
Starting a Local Cancer Care Ministry
Facilitated by Dave & Debbie Williams
Are you a church leader, paid or volunteer, who wants to know how your church can start a cancer ministry? Come learn how to care well for your own members affected by Cancer and how you can take it outside the walls of the church and impact the Kingdom of God . We’ll let you know how we did it, what worked, and more importantly, what didn’t work. You’ll also learn about some innovative ideas from churches around the country. Come be equipped to develop a flourishing cancer care ministry!
About Dave & Debbie Williams: Debbie and Dave Williams are the hosts of Facing Cancer Together. They serve at Cottonwood Creek as the volunteer directors of the Cancer Care Ministry. In 2009 an ER doctor found a tumor on Debbie’s pancreas and tests revealed the cancer had spread to her liver and lymph nodes. She was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Even in the face of that devastating diagnosis Debbie drew on her unwavering faith and prayed ‘thy will be done and if it be Your will I hope to see a Grandchild born.’ Debbie was one of the first patients to receive a new treatment for Neuroendocrine Pancreatic Cancer – the first new treatment for Pancreatic Cancer in 50 years. For most of the past 10 years she has received this injection every 28 days, which stops the growth of tumors , but can’t eliminate the cancer. Because of the concern for long term side effects of the new drug her Oncologist recommended she stop the treatment after 2 years with no evidence of cancer. Soon after when scans showed over 30 small tumors, nodules and lesions in her liver and bones, she went back on the 28 day regimen and will continue to get these ‘miracle injections’ the rest of her life. Their gratitude for God’s Grace inspired a passionate desire to help others going through cancer. In 2012 Debbie met Carolyn Freeman, a breast cancer survivor, in their Life Group at Cottonwood. Together they helped birth the Cottonwood Creek Cancer Care Ministry. Five Grandkids later the Williams feel blessed and thankful and try their best to appreciate every hour of every day. Dave is proud to most often be recognized as Debbie’s Husband. 🙂
